Regrets

I'm writing this for Sunday Scribblings'
.
What about this for a quote!

“I would much rather have regrets about not doing what people said, than regretting not doing what my heart led me to and wondering what life had been like if I'd just been myself.”

I have to admit it took me ages to make out what it was saying, it’s certainly a mouthful! But I like the sentiment – I think!

I assume it means that some regrets are more important than others. I think, correct me if I’m wrong, that not doing what your heart says is more regrettable than not doing what your friends tell you to do.

Actually I’m not sure I agree. Doing what my heart has told me has got me into all sorts of trouble. I often deeply regret listening to myself.

On the other hand, my friends have often given me advice which I have stupidly ignored and regretted like crazy.

Are you following this or are you beginning to regret starting to read it?

It also talks about wondering what life would be like if I’d just been myself. Wow, it would be a disaster! I’m a bit accident prone, and I get myself in all sorts of scrapes. If I hadn’t listened to what people suggested to me I dread to think what would have happened!

I’ve just found a simpler quote. “Forget regret, or life is yours to miss”. And another, “If only. Those must be the two saddest words in the world.”

But the funniest quote I came across was this one by an actor I’ve never heard of, Denis Leary – “My biggest regret in life is that I didn't hit John Denver in the mouth while I had the chance.”

  2. I think sometimes you have to also trust your friends' advice too, because isn't it your heart that might have chosen those people as friends??

P.S. Denis Leary was a stand-up comedian before becoming an actor. That might explain the quote.

  3. i still don't quite understand the quote either. i think it means that you'll regret not following your heart much more than what others tell you to do.

  5. I will try this one more time...I would regret it if I did not tell you how much I enjoy your thoughts! As for Dennis Leary...well I think he intentionally muddled the quote. When things go wrong, the regret is for the outcome not for who suggested the action. Have a great week.

  6. I was so proud of my second-grade son when he announced one day that he had stopped at the top of the playground equipment--just before he hurled himself over in a mad somersault to the ground--and said to himself, "what would be the consequences of this?" He decided not to, and did not regret it. I felt, that, for once, he had listened to the constant voice of his mother (conscience for those too young or foolish to have their own), and actually saved himself some pain. I wish I could say he followed that pattern for the rest of his life, but alas, as a college student he pretty much does as he pleases, even though time and time again he suffers for not having listened to those older and wiser about some things...of course there have been some times also when he just plowed ahead with some hairbrained sceme, and surprise--it turned out great and all for the good. At least by now he has his own conscience. You sound sensible, responsible, and well on the way to a great balance.
